Zone rights and dwelling-type limits
What does a residential parking permit allow?
It allows up to 24 hours in the assigned residential permit zone, replacing that zone's shorter posted limit. Twenty-four hours is the City-street maximum. A permit does not reserve a space in front of the holder's own home.

When must I renew?
Residential and visitor permits last up to one year. The City sends no renewal reminder. Track the expiry yourself. A permit's eligibility and valid zone should be checked again after moving or changing the property's occupancy.

Plate changes, visitor use and petitions
Can I transfer a permit to another vehicle?
Residential permits are not transferable. They are tied to a specific licence plate and one zone. A change to a new plate invalidates the old permit, so apply for a new one instead of moving the existing decal or hangtag.

Who can use a visitor permit?
Only a genuine visitor who is present at the residence while using it. Residents, permit holders and vehicles registered to the address cannot use it as their own permit. Misuse can cause tickets, towing and cancellation of all permits for a year.

How must I display the permit?
Hangtags go on the rearview mirror. Decals go inside the lower-left driver's side of the windshield or rear window. Keep them visible and unobstructed. An eligible permit hidden from enforcement can still result in a fine.

Can residents request a new parking zone?
A petition for time restrictions needs at least 70% support over a minimum block, with one signer per dwelling. Residential Parking Only requests need 80% of permit-eligible units on both sides and must meet additional criteria after other management options are exhausted.
