Eligibility, duration and applications

How long do permits last?
Permanent permits last three years. Temporary and organizational permits last up to one year. Despite the word permanent, renewal is still required. The expiry date is punched on the permit, and the City does not send reminders.

Where do I apply and what is the fee?
Apply at Revenue Services, City Hall first floor, 1435 Water Street, weekdays 8am to 4pm excluding holidays. The fee is $24 including tax, payable by debit, cash or cheque. Motorcycle applicants apply directly through SPARC BC.

Fees and exactly where parking is free
What do I bring for renewal?
Bring the expired permit. A new doctor's certificate is required for temporary renewals, but the page does not require one for ordinary permanent renewal. The renewal fee is $24 including tax. Organizational renewal can accompany business licensing.

Where does no-charge parking apply?
The City lists its owned lots and parkades and designated accessible stalls. Valid SPARC BC permits are honoured in accessible stalls. Confirm ownership, designation and posted conditions before using a lot, because nearby private operations can have different terms.

Do accessible permits make every street meter free?
No. Ordinary metered on-street parking must be paid unless the space is a designated accessible stall. Private lots, including the hospital and Prospera Place examples, also require payment. A permit is not a universal exemption from parking charges.

Time limits, correct use and enforcement
Can I leave a car longer than 24 hours?
No vehicle may remain in the same block, City lot or parkade for more than 24 hours. The page says posted time limits do not apply in designated accessible stalls, but the 24-hour maximum still does.

How must I display and use the permit?
Hang it from the rearview mirror while parked. It must travel with the named holder, whether driving or being driven. It cannot be lent or used when the holder is absent or not leaving the vehicle.

May I keep permits from several jurisdictions?
The page says each person may hold one accessible permit and cannot hold permits from multiple jurisdictions simultaneously. Misuse, including two permits, can lead to cancellation. Ask the issuing office about a move rather than retaining duplicate active permits.

What if the permit is expired or hidden?
A $100 fine may be issued for an expired or undisplayed permit, with possible towing and other fees. Keep the display clear. Leave space for side lifts and ramps, and do not use a wheelchair-lift bay without a lift-equipped vehicle.
